Our trip to Charleston happened mostly because of FOMO. Gina was in Charleston for a bachelorette party, and after having the kids all weekend (and missing Gina), I put the kids the in the car at 2:00 AM and hit the road. 7 hours later we arrived at our Airbnb in Upper King, Charleston’s buzzing design district.
Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits
We kept breakfast light because, let’s be honest – we knew we’d be in a food coma by the end of the day. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits on King Street is one of my favorite southern power meals, so we stopped there first. At Callie’s, you can get a pimento biscuit sandwich; quintessentially southern and perfectly delicious.
Glazed Gourmet Donuts
From Upper King, we had a long walk ahead of us to get downtown and needed sustenance for the way, so we grabbed a snack at Glazed Gourmet Donuts. The smell alone could have carried us through the day satisfied – I’ve never walked into such an amazing smelling joint in my life! Strawberry champagne, peanut butter and chocolate, and maple bourbon bacon (my personal favorite) are just a few of the delights there. With our bellies full, we continued south for a little shopping.
Under the Almond Tree Boutique
King street has so many amazing boutiques, but the one that ultimately sucked Gina and I in was Under the Almond Tree. Readers should be warned that Gina is a self-described stroller fanatic, so this store had us hooked at the window display. Inside, it was filled with a curated selection of top-quality baby products. Even Gina admitted – the buyer knows their baby gear! We left with a Veer Wagon in hand.
Historic Charleston Market & SNOB
Next, we checked out the Historic Charleston Market and took in all the handmade goods from local craftsman. This market really is a part of history, since it’s been around since the 1790s. Aside from the Veer Wagon, our family blended right into the historical surroundings (ha). We took the back door out of the market, which brought us to SNOB (Slightly North of Broad) for lunch.
Even though SNOB is a newer restaurant, it feels like it’s been there just as long as the market. As we looked around at the other patrons, it felt as if we were among Charleston high society. The food is first-rate, too – there’s literally not a bad thing on the menu.
Charleston Waterfront Park
After lunch, we were in the mood for pineapple. Lucky for us, the Pineapple fountain at the Charleston Waterfront Park was just around the corner.
Asher was in absolute heaven running through the harbor side playground, and Gina, Addison and I were right there with him. We ran and played for an hour and a half, and by the end of it Gina and I had two sleepy boys.
We decided to take the long way back to our Airbnb up through the historic district of Charleston. Passing by the vibrant homes on Rainbow Row, it was easy to imagine ourselves back in time, strolling on cobblestone streets with horse-drawn carriages clattering by.
Our growling stomachs snapped us back to 2018 just as we happened upon Poogen’s Porch located on elegant Queen Street. Poogan’s is an absolutely gorgeous upscale Charleston restaurant, located in a renovated historic home that oozes Southern Hospitality. I tried their Low Country Shrimp in Grits (when in Rome). The grits were thick and saucy but still light-tasting and not over-filling at all, striking the perfect balance between classic southern fare and modern taste.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream
Of course, the day couldn’t end without dessert. Back in Upper King we stopped by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. After waiting in line for 20 minutes and taste testing half a dozen flavors, we experienced ice cream heaven. Gina and I ordered Middle West Whiskey and Pecan, and Asher got Strawberry Buttermilk, all in buttercrisp waffle cones.
Sad note here – Asher dropped his cone a few bites into it. Fortunate for him, mom and dad still had plenty left to share.
